Pizza Size Comparison

Small, medium, and large are just labels. Put two sizes next to a phone, then see which price actually buys more pizza.

12 inch vs 16 inch

A phone sits beside a medium and an extra-large so the jump is easy to see. Want your own sizes? Open the full tool and tap an inch preset.

Why the inch number fools people

A 16-inch pizza is only four inches wider than a 12-inch. But you eat the whole circle, and that area grows much faster than the inch gap on the menu.

So “large” and “party” mean whatever that shop printed. When you compare deals, trust the inches—not the name.

What shops usually mean by size

These are common sizes for round US-style pizzas. Your local place might be off by about an inch.

Feeding notes assume a normal appetite and a regular crust—not deep dish.

Mistakes almost everyone makes

It’s natural to add the inch numbers in your head. Pizza doesn’t work that way.

A 12-inch is not two 6-inch pizzas

When the width doubles, you get about four times the pizza—not twice. One 12-inch is closer to four 6-inch pies. Two 6-inch pies only add up to about half a 12-inch.

“Four inches bigger” isn’t a little more food

From 12 to 16 inches looks like a small step on the box. You actually get about three-quarters more pizza. The same four-inch jump from 10 to 14 is nearly double the food.

Two mediums often beat one large

Two 12-inch mediums give you twice one medium. A typical 14-inch large is only about a third more than one medium. So two mediums usually win on food—unless that shop’s “large” is much bigger. Check the inches, then the price.

How much more food you get

Here’s each size next to a normal 12-inch medium. Bigger numbers mean more pizza on the plate.

A 16-inch is almost twice a 12-inch. Two 12-inch pies still beat one 16-inch on food. Stepping from a medium to one 14-inch large is a milder upgrade—often what people mean by “go a bit bigger.”

Which pizza is the better deal?

Put in the size and the menu price for two pies. We’ll show which one costs less for the amount of pizza—not just which sticker looks cheaper.

Quick price check

Enter size and price for two pizzas. The better deal is the one that costs less for the same amount of food.

We treat each pizza as a flat circle. Crust style and toppings aren’t included—just size versus price.

What big chains usually serve

These inches show up on many published menus. Always double-check when you order—shops change recipes.

Costco’s food-court pizza is often about 18 inches—bigger than a typical large. Pizza Hut’s personal pan is its own product, not the same as a round “small.”

Try it yourself

Four quick steps:

  1. On the home page, open Custom and choose Pizza.
  2. Tap a size like 12″ or 16″, or type the diameter in inches or cm.
  3. Add another pizza—or a phone—so you can see the difference.
  4. Share the link if you want. To compare prices, use the calculator on this page.

Common questions

What size is a large pizza?

At many US chains, large is about 14 inches across. Extra large is often 16. Labels aren’t the same everywhere—check the shop’s chart.

Is a 12-inch pizza the same as two 6-inch pizzas?

No. One 12-inch has about four times the pizza of one 6-inch—so it’s closer to four small pies, not two.

Why does a slightly bigger pizza feel like so much more food?

Because the whole surface grows faster than the inch number. Going from 12 to 14 inches adds about a third more pizza; 12 to 16 adds about three-quarters more.

Are two mediums bigger than one large?

Usually yes on food: two 12-inch mediums are twice one medium, while a 14-inch large is only about a third more than one medium. Confirm your shop’s inches before you decide.

Do Domino’s, Papa Johns, and Pizza Hut use the same sizes?

Their common round sizes often land on 10, 12, 14, and 16 inches. Crust and cuts still differ. Compare inches, not just the word “large.”

What size is a Costco pizza?

Food-court pizzas are often about 18 inches—noticeably bigger than a typical 14-inch large. Put both in the tool to see the gap.

How do I compare my own pizza sizes?

On the home page: Custom → Pizza, pick a preset or type the size, then add another pizza or a phone. The sample above already shows a phone with 12 and 16 inch pies.

How do I compare pizza prices fairly?

Use the calculator on this page. Enter each size and menu price; the better deal costs less for the amount of pizza. We don’t keep live chain prices—they change by store.

Does this work for deep dish or square pizzas?

The chart is built for round, flat pies by width across. Deep dish can use the pan width as a rough guide, but it’s thicker and fuller—don’t treat this as a calorie count.
